Bulgaria now granted visa-free access by land to the Schengen Area!

Romania and Bulgaria join the EU’s visa-free Schengen zone

Romania and Bulgaria have officially been granted full membership in the Schengen Area, a pivotal achievement after years of navigating political and technical hurdles. Starting January 1, 2025, land border controls have been lifted between these nations and the existing Schengen zone, enabling seamless, passport-free travel across borders.

A Reward for Past Investors

For those who made the strategic choice to invest in Bulgaria’s Investor Program for Residency & Citizenship, the rewards are now evident. Bulgarian citizenship grants access to the Schengen Area, and investors now benefit from enhanced mobility within the region.

An Extra Win

Bulgaria is working to meet all necessary requirements to join the United States Visa Waiver Program (VWP) by 2026, according to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry. Recent data from the US State Department reveals that the percentage of tourist visa denials for Bulgarians in 2024 dropped to 6.02%—the lowest in 18 years. In comparison, the denial rate in 2023 was nearly double at 11.61%.
To qualify for the VWP, the visa refusal rate must fall below 3%. Achieving this threshold remains a top diplomatic priority for Bulgaria since joining the European Union. Inclusion in the program would grant Bulgarians visa-free access to the United States, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations, and an extra win for Bulgarian Residents.

A Growing Schengen Zone

This expansion brings the Schengen Area to 29 member countries, encompassing over 450 million people. With the growth of the Schengen Area, global citizens gain enhanced opportunities for greater mobility and economic potential.
On the other hand, while an EU resident can now enjoy visa-free travel to 29 countries, a non-EU resident can also access these countries visa-free but must first obtain an ETIAS.

The Schengen Area consists of 29 countries as of January 2025:

European Union Member States (25 total):

Austria Belgium Bulgaria
Croatia Czech Republic Denmark
Estonia Finland France
Germany Greece Hungary
Italy Latvia Lithuania
Luxembourg Malta Netherlands
Poland Portugal Romania
Slovakia Slovenia Spain
Sweden

European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Countries (4 total):

Iceland
Liechtenstein
Norway
Switzerland
